Brunei is a member of ASEAN, a political body which strives to promote regional cooperation on political and economic issues in Southeast Asia.

ASEAN has launched both an Inter-governmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) and more recently, in 2010, a Women and Children's Commission. The Women and Children's Commission is tasked with promoting and protecting women and children's rights, building judicial and administrative capacity, and promoting data collection and research. It is expected to focus on human trafficking, child labour, children in armed conflict and gender discrimination.

Both bodies have received widespread criticism for their lack of transparency and failure to consult with NGOs.
